Product Review; Newly launched at O&N Collective – Skincare Line Blissoma, by Michelle Barge

The “bliss” is in easy, organic, aromatic, perfection

We all make lifestyle changes that are pivotal turning points in how we live our lives and that are marked in our cerebral calendars forever:  becoming a vegetarian, no longer being a vegetarian, the realization that 4 roommates was 3 too many, quitting smoking, starting a regular yoga and meditation practice, the importance of really good sheets, and that non-organic, unsustainable food choices just wasn’t an option.  I can also add to that list the profound switch to using all organic and natural skincare products.  And for me that is defined by not using any products that contain sodium lauryl sulfates (SLS), parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, and petroliates or in general petrochemicals.  Note that SLS has gotten a bad wrap for its connection to cancer as the American Cancer Society has deemed no direct correlation.  For me it is still a strong foaming agent, very drying and can cause mild to sever dermatitis in some users.

Back to the switch. This switch to organic and natural skincare came for me after 9/11, when as New Yorkers, our day-to-day environment had been so altered by toxins, and as a city and nation, the feeling of vulnerability was at an all time high.  I immediately gravitated to what could I control in my own little universe and that was my body – what I put in it, on it and how I exercised it on a daily basis.

Thus the experimentations and clean out began.  I have always used high-end products, but when I looked at the ingredients plus the cost I was horrified.  I desperately wanted a better, cleaner, healthier and a “less-is-more” mentality.   I began making my own beauty products (and sold them), using combinations of  organic base oils and essential oils and quickly gravitated to the power of essential oils for their therapeutic and aromatherapy properties.  I also had a focus (or fixation) on multi-use products.  “Why does one need a separate oil for face, body and hair?” was a daily mantra.

Once I became a convert to only using oils and essential oils on my body, then I had to find products that were a bit harder to make like facial cleansers and hair products.  And that has been an on-going search, experimentation and conversion process.  And trust that I have tried them all and the following are ones I still turn to: Dr. Hauschka, Jurlique, Evan Healy and Dr. Alkaitis.  A new(er) kid on the block, Tata Harper – is also a favorite.

So when Blissoma came onto the market and now newly launched at O&N Collective, I was thrilled when asked to review the line – and bliss it is.  As stated, the chemical make-up attributes I am looking for in my skincare products are those not containing the “nasties” I mentioned above.   Blissoma takes that to the next level described as such:

…the entire line eliminates petrochemical ingredients, parabens, and synthetic colors and fragrances while maintaining a sophisticated feel.  Zero “vegetable emulsifying wax”, pthalates, neuropeptides, or other artificial “beauty” chemicals.

Instead Blisssoma chooses active, potent ingredients that are based on nutrients, antioxidants, and advanced phytochemistry. Generally their ingredients are just 1 step away from the original (raw) plant material from which they came. Carefully researched botanicals determine their most active principles and then each is extracted and added to our formulas in a way that preserves its most effective medicinal components. All products are 100% natural and almost the entire line is Certified Vegan; packed with certified organic botanicals, bioavailable vitamins, essential fatty acids, and skin-soothing seed oils. These key ingredients demonstrate Blissoma’s dedication to groundbreaking, pure actives from natural sources in addition to cultivating their own herb extracts, even juicing fresh organic produce directly from local fields…

And then I heard the angels sing.  But the proof was in the using and Blissoma did NOT disappoint.  For the last month I have been using the 5 following Blissoma’s products listed below. I am in my 40s, with sensitive yet regular skin since I’ve been using oils exclusively.  Prior to using oils, I was combination skin and not balanced.  I also seek out anything that is anti-aging, firming and toning.  I look for radiance not a matte look.  Click on product for full product and ingredient descriptions, which are phenomenal and my focus is on usage and results.

Fresh Mild Facial Cleanser

The cleanser is divine.  The product is described as a cream cleanser, but its more of a cool creamy gel.  Its base is brown rice so this is excellent for those looking for a vegan product or has a gluten intolerance.  After dampening my face, the first thing that wowed me was the incredible scent.  I do not use any synthetic perfumes and cannot handle heavy fragrances.  This was just the heavenly scent of all the great botanicals that fill this product – lavender, chamomile, vetiver.  Post use my skin was calm, balanced, radiant, glowing.  Also this product and the toner come in recycled aluminum containers to shield from light.  Another note:  when you think the bottle is empty using the pump, untwist and shake out.  I got 3 more, twice a day usage.  This will definitely be a standard cleanser in my beauty regime.

Tone Intensive Hydration Tonique

I am simply just a fan of hydrosols and spray toners.  I stopped using cotton balls and toners years ago when I read about the “drag” effect on the skin in a French magazine.  In the winter with the overly hot NYC apartments, I opt for all the hydration I can get.  But there is nothing oily or heavy about this product.  It is just full of calming, cooling, and depuffing attributes.  I used this product a lot.  After cleansing, make-up, post yoga, while working at desk… So next purchase need to grab two toniques!

Awake Morning Firming Facial Moisture

If I was forced to choose one product out of the five, and I do mean FORCED, this firming facial moisture would be it!  Not only do I look for hydration, but also firming is my other “go-to” buzz word in products.  But this was not just buzz or hype.  Since switching to oils for all my moisturizing needs – especially for my daytime regime, I was a bit skeptical on turning back to a moisturizer, but again – like the cleanser – the texture is so light, cooling and healing.  I could load up on this product on my face and never felt like I was using too much.  If I was going to teach and just needed a light touch, I felt fresh, presentable and my skin balanced.  If my skin was feeling a bit more challenged or puffy, I would apply the Firming Facial Moisture twice.  Once as a base and let that seep in, then again as a base for some facial massage.  The skin only looking better and better.  The anti-inflammatory and natural mattifying (but not matte look) properties of this product make it a winner.

Restore Deep Healing Oil Serum

Here comes the oil sung in my head to the Beatles “Here Comes the Sun” and that’s exactly what this product reminds me of – a touch of sun, deep golden elixir for the skin.  By now, you know I am a total convert to oils.  I love the way just a drop transforms my skin into a different skin.  I love the radiance it gives, the absorption, and how any makeup goes on effortlessly.  Restore Deep Healing Oil Serum has so many amazing ingredients, that I can’t believe the reasonable price.  With one of its ingredients being helichrysum, there’s a natural gravitation to this product as helichrysum is one of the best healing agents in the world.  I have used this product in many ways:  at night on its own, mixed with either of the moisturizers, and especially after a clay mask.  If you’re looking for a restorative treatment oil that can be used in a myriad of ways, packed with incredible oils – this oil is a must in your beauty cabinet.

Peace Evening Facial Créme

Don’t think this product is just for the evening.  I am a bit anal about my product use, i.e. using same brands in a regime; using things in order, but “evening” in this product just think calming.  This is a wonderful evening cream, no doubt, again filled with all sorts of restorative minerals and healing properties.  I found this product was excellent after a long day when you feel like your face was really exposed – makeup, multiple touch-ups, running around without a chance for a proper refresh — you want to just soothe and nourish and calm the skin.  But I also found this product great in the a.m., applied with a lighter touch when some unknown redness or irritation has popped up.

All in all, I am so glad I was introduced to Blissoma and look forward to trying more of their products and reporting back.  But based on usage thus far, I can only project that all of Blissoma’s products are magical.  They are made with the best quality ingredients, integrity and from the moment you encounter them – you also know made with love.

In heath & wellness,

Michelle

Sounds like my kind of line. I’m just about out of my current brand of cleanser so this post came just in time. Very excited that this product is not only chemical free but is also gluten free. Thanks, Michelle!
